The High Valley Riders are a ladies drill team that practices in Sammamish/Eastside area. We are a competitive team that follow good horsemanship and respect for our horses above all things. Our team excepts riders who want to learn the sport of drill and have fun with their horse. We work hard, ride to win, and have more fun that should be allowed.
We welcome any breed or color of horse, but don't accept gaited horses. Your horse must not kick or bite. Your horse must be able to learn to rate (change speeds within a gait), stop and stand quietly, pick up the canter immediately, and work on the correct lead. We ride with the left hand (Western) during performance so neck reining and leg queuing are very important. Training equipment is acceptable during practice. Western gear is used for all performances and demonstrations. Riders are highly encouraged to use safety equipment such as knee pads and helmets. Horses must wear medicine boots or splint boots on the front legs and are recommended for the hind legs for protection and support. If your horse does not do everything correctly, don't worry - there will be time to get your horse working well. Please don't be discouraged if your horse acts up the first couple of practices, this is typical of horses that are new to drill maneuvers. As they accustom themselves to the other horses this behavior usually decreases. Sometimes it will take a horse a while to get used to this kind of activity and if he doesn't take to it right away, just let him stand and watch. We believe strongly in teamwork, but in order to be an effective team member we know that we must be the best individual rider and horse unit we can be. This takes patience, practice and regular attendance. If you would like to join us, please contact us! |
